Champion: Bill Doty – Doty & Miller Architects
and Planners (Nominated by: Melanie Kintner – Cleveland
Green Building Coaltion) Bill’s
dedication to sustainability goes back to his college days. He puts
sustainability into practice daily. The recent green renovation of a
post office in Bedford for the offices of Doty & Miller is a prime
example. He gives of himself by sitting on the board of numerous environmental
organizations, including the Cleveland Green Building Coalition. He
recently served as an advisor to one of the top teams in the USGBC Emerging
Green Builders design competition. Through his practice and his personal
commitment he makes sustainability happen.
Champion:
Bill Doty – Doty & Miller Architects and
Planners (Nominated by: Scott Anderson –
Doty & Miller Architects and Planners) I am nominating
William Doty as a Champion of Sustainability. In addition to his personal
commitment to sustainability, he has given countless hours to promoting
sustainable concepts to the leaders of the business and political communities
as well as the general public. (Attached is a list of boards and groups
he has served).
More importantly, as an architect, Bill has made sustainability a reality
in LEED registered buildings such as the Cleveland Environmental Center,
the Geauga YMCA (to be completed in January 2005), and the proposed
Lakewood YMCA. Additionally, Bill and his partner, Chuck Miller, have
expressed their commitment to sustainability in their own LEED registered
office in Bedford. A grant from the State of Ohio will allow Doty and
Miller Architects to install building-integrated photovoltaics as a
demonstration of the technology. Many more projects are "on the
boards" for implementing green technology in businesses and homes.
Ultimately, sustainability is about people`s relationship to the world
and each other. Bill and Chuck go out of their way to create a work
environment and approach to business that is open and fair to employees,
clients and associates.

Champion: Bill Doty - Doty & Miller Architects
and Planners *winner*
(Nominated by: Heather Kuhn - Doty & Miller Architects
and Planners) I`d like
to nominate Bill Doty of Doty and Miller Architects for a Cleveland
Sustainability Champion Award in the Building Category. Bill`s commitment
to environmental issues can be seen in the retrofitting of his offices
using the principles his firm espouses to his clients. Bill has been
on the board of trustees for the Cleveland Green Building Coalition
and Green Energy Ohio and on the a Advisory Boards for
Entrepreneurs for Sustainability and Parkworks. In addition Bill is
a past president of the Cleveland Earthday Coalition, showing that his
commitment to the environment goes far beyond the building industry. Under Bill`s
direction Doty and Miller`s commitment to the environment has continued
to grow. His firm now has six LEED accredited professionals on staff,
giving them more accredited green Building professionals then any other
firm in the state. In the past year Doty and Miller has completed 2
green buildings, their own offices and the Cleveland Environmental Center.
In addition a third building The Geauga YMCA is nearing completion.
All three of these buildings are applying for certification under LEED. In addition
community education is a central part of the firms philosophy. Bill
regularly gives talks on Green Building to community groups. In October
the firm hosted a full day class for teachers at the Cuyahoga Valley
Career Center, providing information that can be integrated into their
classes. In addition, planning is underway for a Solar Workshop to be
held next spring in which volunteers will help install a building integrated
PV system on Doty and Miller`s Office Building. Bills commitment
to the environment is evident in his personal and professional life.
It is a central aspect of his business, he is truly a sustainability
champion.
Champion:
Dave Rupp – The Cabinet King
(Nominated by Melanie Kintner – Cleveland Green
Building Coalition) By his
commitment to using sustainable materials in his custom cabinetry, Dave
has taken his products from being beautiful, to being beautiful and
green. His adoption of sustainable materials serves to educate others
about their importance and helps to create markets by increasing demand
for the materials. In addition, thanks to the market for his sustainable
cabinetry, he has created more jobs in the community. He is making things
happen.
Champion:
Dave Rupp – The Cabinet King
(Nominated by: Brian Schneiderman – Shorebank Enterprise) Dave had
an idea and is making it happen. He has always had an interest in environmental
and community issues. He has owned his own cabinet business for sometime
as well. And he had an idea about how to combine those core things.
Dave is mixing an ounce of planning and a pound of action to turn his
idea of making "green" cabinets into a reality. He has done
a good amount of research and is actively working on a business plan
that will help him take his business to an entirely new level. Orders
are starting to come in as well as trade show invitations in places
like Chicago. Bringing manufacturing in house also means that he is
already creating new jobs. I look forward to seeing Dave and his business
take off.
Champion:
David Rowe - EcoVillage
(Nominated by: Lee Chilcote, Dave Sharkey - Pure) We would
like to nominate him due to the fact that, while he was employed as
the Project Manager of the EcoVillage project, he was a tireless champion
of this effort. David`s work was essential in helping to create a national
model for an urban ecovillage that would both integrate energy-efficient/green
and transit-oriented design, as well as revitalize the housing stock
and bring new investment in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood. David`s
work ethic and innovative thinking are recognized throughout the city,
so much so that Linda Hudecek hired him to work for the City just a
few months ago. Although I have not had the opportunity to work directly
with David Rowe due to the fact that I have been at PURE only a short
time, many of our agents and staff have, and they can attest that the
success of the EcoVillage project (it is fairly close to being sold
out with only 5 units left) is in no small part due to David`s efforts.
Champion:
Mike Williams – Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority
(Nominated by: Cary Mathews - Business Interiors and
Environments) I would
like to nominate Mike Williams the Executive Deputy Director of the
Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority. Mike is an incredible visionary
and has received numerous accolades and awards from the State of Ohio
for bringing energy efficiency and leading with sustainable practices
in the area of public housing, and is worthy of this recognition. Mike is
ready to embark on an ambitious building renovation project which will
be the first LEED Certified Gold facility in Stark County. The old Knights
of Columbus Building which has been inhabited by pigeons and varmits
is about to get an incredible makeover!! This 54,
000 sq ft. facility will house a Senior Center in conjunction with Mercy
Medical Center/Wellness facility, plus the YMCA, and Adult Daycare Provider,
and Incubator Agencies that support senior citizens. John Patrick Picard,
a Canton Architect is "LEED`ing" this effort with groundbreaking
expected to be late spring `04. Mike is an incredible guy, and is the
beacon of light in an otherwise stagnant downtown Canton community.
I believe Mike is truly worthy of this recognition.
